The City of Ryde has an area of 40.651 sq kms and lies in the central northern part of the Sydney Metropolitan area, approximately 12kms from the centre of Sydney and lies on the north bank of the Parramatta River. It comprises of Ryde, West Ryde, North Ryde & East Ryde with another 12 within its boundaries.
Ryde was named after the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight.. It is the 3rd oldest settlement in Australia, after Sydney & Parramatta. The name “Ryde” was used from the 1840s and adopted as the name of the muncipality in 1870.
The suburb contains the oldest settler’s cottage in Australia, Addington, on Vicotria Road. Other historic buildings include the police station on Victoria Road and Willandra, Wilandra Street. Both of these icons are listed on the register of the National Estate.
Features of the area include its close proximity to the city CBD & Homebush Stadium, the iconic Top Ryde Shopping centre which is currently undergoing a massive renovation and upgrade, the Ryde Aquatic Centre which hosted events for the Sydney 2000 olympics., and the locals favourite hub - The Royal Hotel.
